In January 2025, catastrophic earthquakes shook the Himalayan region near Mount Everest, claiming the lives and injuring hundreds of people. Measuring 5.1-7.1 on the Richter scale, the quakes caused extensive damage in Nepal, Tibet and sent tremors across northern India, including Delhi, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
Avalanches and landslides swept through the region, destroying homes, roads, and vital infrastructure. Rescuers are racing against time, battling freezing temperatures and rough terrain to find survivors.
In India, no major damage was reported, but the tremors caused widespread panic. Residents rushed out of buildings as the ground shook for several seconds.
Why the Himalayas Are Prone to Earthquakes
The Himalayas lie on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which collide and push against each other. This geological activity creates immense pressure, frequently releasing energy in the form of earthquakes.
For individuals, knowing what to do before, during, and after an earthquake can make a critical difference. Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but their impact can be mitigated through awareness and action.
Before an Earthquake
- Assemble an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a whistle, first aid supplies, and important documents in earthquake zones.
- Secure Your Home: Anchor heavy furniture, secure shelves to walls, and remove objects that could fall.
- Learn Safe Spots: Identify sturdy tables or areas away from windows and heavy objects where you can take cover.
During an Earthquake
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay Indoors: If inside, stay put. Move away from windows, mirrors, and heavy objects.
- If Outside: Move to an open area, away from buildings, trees, power lines, and poles.
- If in a Vehicle: Pull over to a safe location, avoiding bridges, overpasses, and buildings. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.
After the Earthquake
- Check for Injuries and Hazards: Provide first aid if needed. Look for gas leaks, damaged electrical lines, or structural damage.
- Avoid Damaged Areas: Stay away from buildings or structures that may collapse during aftershocks.
- Stay Informed: Listen to official updates and emergency broadcasts for instructions.
Governments and organizations must prioritize infrastructure safety, early warning systems, and public education regarding earthquakes.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this disaster, and efforts to provide relief and rebuild the region are already underway. Let this be a reminder to all of us: preparedness saves lives.
