“Bad Newz,” directed by Anand Tiwari, is a Bollywood rom-com starring Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, and Ammy Virk. The film attempts to blend ’90s Bollywood nostalgia with contemporary comedic elements but ends up being a mixed bag.
The plot centers on Saloni Bagga (Triptii Dimri), an ambitious chef who finds herself in a bizarre love triangle with Akhil Chadha (Vicky Kaushal) and Gurbir Pannu (Ammy Virk) after an unusual pregnancy scenario. The film leverages a rare medical condition called heteropaternal superfecundation, where twins are born from different fathers, to create comedic and dramatic tension.
Vicky Kaushal shines as Akhil, delivering a charismatic and engaging performance that stands out amidst a script filled with self-referential jokes and nostalgic nods to classic Bollywood films. His portrayal is noted for its wit and spontaneity, keeping the audience entertained even when the narrative falters.
However, the film’s heavy reliance on Bollywood references and inside jokes often overshadows its own story, making it feel more like a collection of skits rather than a cohesive narrative. Triptii Dimri’s performance as Saloni struggles to find depth, while Ammy Virk brings a surprising charm to his role as Gurbir.
Despite its shortcomings, “Bad Newz” is a fun watch, primarily due to its lively soundtrack, vibrant visuals, and the nostalgic value it brings to fans of classic Bollywood rom-coms. However, the film’s lack of narrative depth and predictability prevent it from achieving greater heights.
