The 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections were held on February 5, 2025, to elect all 70 members of the assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority by winning 48 out of 70 seats, marking its return to power in Delhi after 27 years.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had governed Delhi for the past decade, won 22 seats, a substantial decrease from its previous tally of 62 seats in the 2020 elections. Prominent AAP leaders, including national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Somnath Bharti, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Satyendar Jain and Durgesh Pathak, lost their respective constituencies.
Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and former Chief Minister of Delhi, contested from the New Delhi constituency. He was defeated by Parvesh Verma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Indian National Congress (INC) did not secure any seats for the third consecutive election. However, it experienced a slight increase in its vote share compared to the previous election. Notably, 67 out of the 70 Congress candidates forfeited their deposits.
The voter turnout was reported at 60.54%, indicating active participation from the electorate. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 45.56% of the total votes, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) received 43.57%, reflecting a closely contested election.
Awadh Ojha
Awadh Ojha, a renowned UPSC educator and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, contested from the Patparganj constituency. He was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Ravinder Singh Negi. Following his defeat, Ojha Sir expressed gratitude to his supporters and the party, acknowledging that limited time prevented him from personally connecting with more constituents, which he believed contributed to his loss. He vowed to learn from this experience and continue his efforts in public service.
This electoral win follows the BJP’s success in other state elections and strengthens its position in the upper house of India’s parliament.
The victory is significant not only for its prestige but also for the control it provides over potential protests against the central government. The AAP now retains governance only in the state of Punjab.
