Life Rewards Action Not Intelligence: Conor Neill

One important lesson I’ve learned in life is that action, not intelligence, brings rewards. When I was younger, I often depended on my natural ability to do well in school without putting in much effort. This gave me the false belief that being smart mattered more than taking action. But over time, I realized a problem that many intelligent people face: the smarter you are, the better you get at making excuses. You can convince yourself that every action is too small, too insignificant, or just not worth doing. However, real progress comes from taking one step, then another, and another. It’s the small, consistent actions that eventually lead to great achievements.

This idea applies to everything in life. For example, on my YouTube channel, the growth isn’t just because the ideas I share are exceptionally deep or wise. It’s also because I consistently show up, share what I’ve learned, and put those ideas into action. Over time, I’ve become better at expressing myself because I keep doing it week after week, year after year. Even if the first steps aren’t perfect, they teach you something. That’s why action is so powerful—it helps you grow, learn, and engage with the world.

Another thing I learned is that discipline plays a key role in turning ideas into action. For instance, when I started writing, my mentor encouraged me to write regularly, but I didn’t make much progress for months, even years. Then, I worked with a writing coach who pushed me to track how many words I wrote every day. It was eye-opening because I realized I felt like I was working hard, but the actual results were minimal. By measuring my progress daily, I could see where I needed to improve. This taught me that it’s easy to feel busy without actually accomplishing much.

The same idea applies to other tasks, like creating videos. Finishing a video is a clear measure of action—it shows that you’ve taken an idea and turned it into something real. So, my advice to you is this: don’t overthink or talk yourself out of taking action. Find something meaningful to measure—whether it’s words written, videos completed, or any other goal—and track your progress regularly. This will help you see if you’re truly disciplined and whether your efforts are leading to results.

Remember, everything good in life happens when you get up, take action, and engage with the world. Start small, stay consistent, and let your actions guide you forward.
