India’s ambition to become a global hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) has received a massive financial and strategic boost. The Adani Group has announced plans to invest up to $5 billion in the large-scale AI data center project being developed by Google in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

This collaboration signals the immense capital being mobilized to meet the booming demand for AI-specific computing power in the world’s most populous nation.

Doubling Down on India’s AI Future

The partnership involves two of the world’s biggest corporate entities and underscores the urgent need for dedicated infrastructure to run large AI models:

  • Google’s Commitment: The project is part of Google’s previously announced plan to invest $15 billion over five years to set up an AI data center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This investment is Google’s largest ever in India.
  • Adani’s Role: The Adani Group’s investment of up to $5 billion will be channelled through Adani Connex, a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and the private data center operator, EdgeConneX. Adani Connex will be critical in developing the infrastructure required for the power-intensive, specialized data centers that link thousands of AI chips in clusters.
  • Scale and Power: The data center campus is planned to have an initial power capacity of 1 gigawatt, highlighting the enormous computing requirements needed for generative AI services.

Strategic Investment in Data Capacity

The investment reflects a broader strategic pivot by India’s biggest conglomerates, including Adani and Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance, to build substantial data center capacity to capitalize on the AI boom.

  • Local Growth: Adani Group CFO Jugeshinder Singh noted that the interest is widespread, stating, “It’s not just Google, there are a lot of parties that would like to work with us, especially when the data center capacity goes to gigawatt and higher.”
  • Government Focus: The initiative is being hailed by political leaders as a major boost to India’s digital growth and its long-term ambition to be a global leader in AI, addressing critical concerns around data sovereignty and infrastructure scale.

This massive investment signals that the race to build the physical backbone for India’s AI revolution is now fully underway.
