WOLFS: George Clooney and Brad Pitt lead a stylish, star-powered crime caper

by | Sep 27, 2024 | Entertainment

Jon Watts’ Wolfs delivers a punchy blend of comedy and suspense, reminiscent of iconic heist movies. Starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, this film is a return to form for both actors and director Watts, whose previous work in the Spider-Man trilogy lent him a keen eye for entertaining set pieces and sharp dialogue. Set against the backdrop of a New York night gone horribly wrong, the story begins with a grisly accident and spirals into a series of chaotic, comedic, and often absurd twists as Clooney and Pitt’s characters try to cover it all up.

The film’s brilliance lies not only in the star power of Clooney and Pitt but also in its ensemble cast. Austin Abrams, who plays an awkward and nervous young accomplice, manages to steal several scenes from his more seasoned co-stars, adding a dynamic layer to the film’s comedic elements. The duo’s chemistry brings the film alive, with their banter often devolving into bickering and ego battles that showcase the playful rivalry between their characters.

While the premise of Wolfs—two professional cleaners in a race to cover up a crime—could easily veer into the overly familiar, Watts injects enough fresh energy to keep things engaging. The cinematography by Larkin Seiple and the neon-lit, shadowy design of New York’s streets further heightens the film’s visual appeal, giving the setting a noir-ish vibe that complements its fast-paced, slick narrative.

Yet, for all its entertainment value, Wolfs doesn’t quite break new ground in the genre. Some plot points feel underdeveloped, and a few of the climactic action sequences lack the punch they promise. Nonetheless, the movie’s tight runtime, combined with its blend of humor, suspense, and charm, makes it an enjoyable watch, especially for fans of crime comedies. Clooney and Pitt’s natural charisma and Watts’ confident direction carry the film, even in its weaker moments.

In short, Wolfs is a solid, if not groundbreaking, entry into the crime-comedy genre, providing enough wit, charm, and excitement to entertain throughout its 108-minute runtime
