Cold Wave and Fog Alert: North India Faces Sharp Temperature Drop and Travel Disruptions

by | Nov 27, 2025 | Nature

North and Central India are bracing for a significant drop in temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing warnings for a fresh spell of cold wave conditions and dense fog today, Thursday, November 27, 2025. This wintry onset is expected to disrupt daily life and severely impact travel across the region.

Cold Wave Conditions and Temperature Drop

The prevailing weather patterns, including fresh snowfall in the Western Himalayas, are triggering a rapid cool-down across the plains:

  • Cold Wave Warning: Cold wave conditions are highly likely to persist in isolated pockets of Punjab and West Rajasthan today and tomorrow, with minimum temperatures dipping 2–3 degrees Celsius below normal across many parts of Northwest India.
  • Intense Chill: Continuous snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh is causing temperatures to drop sharply in the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, and Uttar Pradesh, making night and morning hours extremely cold.
  • Forecast: Temperatures across Central regions, including Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh, are also forecast to fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius, signaling the widespread onset of winter conditions.

Dense Fog Disrupts Rail and Road Travel

The combination of low temperatures and calm winds is creating a persistent blanket of dense fog, severely reducing visibility and crippling transportation networks:

  • Visibility Issues: Shallow to moderate fog is forecast for the morning hours over Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh for the next five days, with mist/haze prevailing at night. This significantly reduces visibility, making travel hazardous.
  • Rail Cancellations: In anticipation of severe fog, Indian Railways has already announced major service adjustments from December 1 to February 28. At least 24 regular mail and express trains originating from or passing through North India have been cancelled, and the frequency of 28 other trains has been reduced. Passengers are advised to expect delays and check updated schedules.
  • Road Safety: Road traffic across major highways in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana is expected to move at a snail’s pace, with authorities issuing advisories for extreme caution due to the risk of low-visibility accidents.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions against the cold, especially the elderly and children, and to plan travel with significant buffer time due to weather-related disruptions.
