Mayotte Struck by Cyclone Chido: Safety Measures for Cyclone Zones

by | Dec 15, 2024 | Nature

Cyclone Chido has devastated Mayotte, France’s Indian Ocean territory, with winds reaching over 225 km/h (140 mph). At least 11 people have been killed, and many more have been injured. Thousands have lost their homes, especially in areas where the majority of the population lives in makeshift houses made from sheet metal. The cyclone has caused significant damage to infrastructure, including the Pamandzi airport, leaving residents without electricity, water, or communication. French authorities have sent emergency personnel, and relief efforts are ongoing.

As the cyclone continues to move towards Mozambique, it’s essential for people living in cyclone-prone areas to take steps to protect themselves and minimize damage.

Strengthen Your Home

Reinforce weak roofs, windows, and doors with additional materials like plywood or metal sheeting. If possible, secure large outdoor objects that could be blown away by strong winds. For houses made of sheet metal or other weak materials, seek safer places to shelter, such as community centers, schools, or cyclone shelters.

Create an Emergency Kit

Pack essential items such as water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and important documents in a waterproof bag.

Know Your Evacuation Routes

Plan ahead and familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and nearby shelters. Make sure everyone in your household knows the plan.

Stay Informed

Regularly check weather updates and follow any instructions from local authorities. If there’s a cyclone warning, be prepared to take action immediately.

Seek Shelter

Stay indoors during the storm, away from windows and glass. If your home is unsafe, go to a nearby shelter or designated safe area. Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Even shallow water can be dangerous, especially with strong currents. Wait for official clearance before going outside. Be cautious of downed power lines, debris, or damaged structures.

By taking these precautions, you can increase your chances of staying safe during a cyclone. The key is to act early, prepare, and remain informed.
