Why Hanuman Ji Is Not Worshipped in This Uttarakhand Village

In most parts of India, Lord Hanuman—considered the most revered deity of Kalyug—is worshipped with deep devotion. From small lanes to large towns, Hanuman Ji’s temples are found everywhere. However, there is a unique village in India where taking the name of Hanuman Ji is strictly prohibited.

This unusual tradition is followed in Dronagiri village, located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. While Lord Ram is worshipped here with full devotion, Hanuman Ji is neither worshipped nor mentioned. You won’t find a single Hanuman temple in the entire village, and people here avoid using names like Hanuman, Bajrang, Sankatmochan, and Maruti.

Why Is Hanuman Ji Not Worshipped in Dronagiri?

The story behind this custom is rooted in events from the Ramayana. According to local beliefs, when Lakshman Ji was injured during the battle with Ravana, Hanuman Ji flew to the Himalayas to find the Sanjivani herb needed to save him.

Unable to identify the correct herb, Hanuman Ji lifted the entire mountain that held the medicinal plants. However, this mountain is believed to be a sacred site guarded by the local deity Latu Devta, who was meditating at that time.

The villagers believe Hanuman Ji did not seek permission before uprooting the mountain. In doing so, he is said to have removed the “right hand” of the mountain deity, disturbing his penance. Since then, the people of Dronagiri have held a grudge and have never forgiven Hanuman Ji.

This is why, even today, the name of Hanuman Ji is not taken, and no idol or temple of Hanuman exists in the village. Interestingly, the people here worship Nimba, a demon considered an enemy of Ram, instead of Hanuman.
