The long wait for details on the next cinematic spectacle from director S.S. Rajamouli (of RRR and Baahubali fame) concluded on Saturday at a colossal launch event. The film, previously known by the working title Globe Trotter, has officially been named ‘Varanasi’ and promises to be an ambitious blend of mythology, time travel, and action-adventure.

The title reveal, which took place at a grand event in Ramoji Film City, was witnessed by over 50,000 frenzied fans and streamed live globally.

The Mythic First Look

The highlight of the evening was the stunning title teaser and the introduction of the film’s star, Mahesh Babu, in his character avatar:

  • Mahesh Babu as Rudhra: The superstar was unveiled in a fierce first look, clad in a blood-soaked shirt, riding a massive bull (Nandi), and brandishing a trishul (trident) against the backdrop of ancient temples. The visual style, with its mythological undertones, immediately sent fans into a frenzy. Mahesh Babu even made a show-stopping entrance on stage atop a mechanical bull, matching the drama of the teaser.
  • The Global Cast: The film confirms a stellar pan-India and global cast, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas playing the enigmatic Mandakini and Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran as the antagonist Kumbha. Priyanka Chopra won over the crowd by addressing them in fluent Telugu, calling Mahesh Babu “incredible and legendary.”

Ramayana and Time Travel: A New Narrative Scale

Rajamouli revealed that the film’s themes are deeply inspired by Hindu epics, blending ancient history with futuristic elements:

  • Ramayana Connection: Rajamouli admitted he never expected to adapt a portion of the Ramayana so early in his career, but confirmed that a crucial sequence, which took 60 days to shoot, draws directly from the epic. He recalled getting “goosebumps” seeing Mahesh Babu in an early look inspired by Lord Rama.
  • Time-Spanning Plot: The teaser hinted at a sweeping narrative that spans continents and centuries, with glimpses of Antarctica, Kenya, and timelines ranging from 512 CE to 7200 BCE, suggesting a complex time-travel or archaeological adventure centered around the spiritual city of Varanasi (Kashi).
  • IMAX Innovation: The director confirmed that Varanasi is being filmed for the Premium Large Scale Format (PLSF) and IMAX projection, underscoring its massive visual ambition.

Despite a minor technical glitch that delayed the teaser screening, the Varanasi title reveal has successfully set the stage for one of the most anticipated global film releases, which is officially slated for Sankranti (January) 2027.
