The Shotgun Wedding: Anecdotes from Rural Bengal is a captivating narrative set in the picturesque village of Phulpukur in rural Bengal. The story follows Dita Roy, a city-bred English lecturer who takes a job at a remote college, only to find herself entangled in a web of local intrigue and complex characters. Among the vivid personalities she encounters are wily politicians, reformed dacoits, scheming businessmen, and wayward student activists, all intertwined with the college’s dubious workings.

Dita’s life becomes increasingly chaotic as she navigates the clash between urban sophistication and rural traditions. The enigmatic Raja, with his startling grey eyes, adds to the drama, haunting Dita’s thoughts and complicating her journey. Their evolving relationship, marked by misunderstandings and emotional depth, is central to the narrative.

The climax of the story, a comically chaotic “shotgun wedding,” is a media sensation covered by the flamboyant Chirag Mukherjee. The novel blends real-life experiences from the author’s own brief stint as a lecturer in West Bengal with imaginative storytelling, offering a humorous yet poignant exploration of educational politics and personal growth. The heart of the tale is the evolving bond between Raja and Dita, set against a backdrop of vibrant rural life and institutional challenges.
