Indian Students Remain Largest International Group in US Campuses Despite Hurdles

Despite facing stricter visa scrutiny, longer appointment wait times, and a general decline in global international student enrollment, India remains the largest source of international students in the United States for the 2024–2025 academic year.

Key Enrollment Trends

The annual Open Doors Report by the Institute of International Education (IIE) highlights the resilience of Indian students seeking higher education abroad:

  • Total Enrollment: A record 3,63,019 Indian students are registered on American campuses, marking a 10% increase over the previous academic year.
  • Global Contrast: This surge comes as overall international student enrollment in the US dropped by 7%, with China (the former frontrunner) continuing its slide.
  • Economic Impact: Indian students’ spending on tuition, fees, and living expenses contributed nearly $14 billion to the US economy in 2024–2025.
  • Changing Streams: While graduate numbers (traditionally India’s strongest stream) saw a slight drop, undergraduate enrollment rose by 11%, and participation in Optional Practical Training (OPT) surged by 47%.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan commented that Indian youth are driving global classrooms and innovation economies with the same confidence they are using to shape India’s own growth story.
