The formation of the new government in Bihar is complete, following the decisive victory of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2025 Assembly elections, where the coalition secured a stunning 202 seats in the 243-member House.

The major developments today, Wednesday, November 19, 2025, confirmed the leadership structure ahead of the swearing-in ceremony:

Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers Finalized

  • Chief Minister: Nitish Kumar, the JD(U) chief, was unanimously elected as the leader of the NDA legislature party. He tendered his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan today as head of the outgoing government and has formally staked a claim to form the new one. He is set to take oath as Chief Minister for a record tenth time.
  • Deputy Chief Ministers: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opted for continuity in its top leadership. Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha were re-elected as the leader and deputy leader of the BJP legislative party, respectively, confirming they will retain their posts as Deputy Chief Ministers in the new government.
  • Single Largest Party: For the first time, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 89 seats, followed closely by Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) with 85 seats. The strong performance of NDA allies, particularly Chirag Paswan’s LJP(RV) (19 seats), consolidated the crushing victory.

Grand Swearing-in Ceremony

The new government’s oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan.

  • High-Profile Attendees: The event is expected to be a major display of national unity, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states confirmed to attend.
  • Cabinet Allocation: Intense negotiations have taken place to finalize the allocation of cabinet berths among the allies, with reports suggesting the BJP will get a larger share of key portfolios commensurate with its status as the single largest party. The JD(U) is reportedly adamant about retaining the crucial Home portfolio.

The outcome not only secures Nitish Kumar’s political longevity but also underscores the enduring support for the NDA’s alliance strategy in the state.
