In early April 2025, India experienced severe thunderstorms and lightning strikes, particularly in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. These extreme weather events resulted in at least 126 fatalities over a two-day period. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted continued extreme weather conditions, including strong winds and hailstorms, in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and eastern India for the coming days.
Experts attribute the increase in lightning incidents to rising global temperatures, which are leading to more frequent and intense thunderstorms.
Lightning Safety Measures
To protect yourself during thunderstorms, consider the following safety tips:
Indoors:
- Stay Away from Water: Avoid bathing, showering, or washing dishes during a thunderstorm, as lightning can travel through plumbing.
- Avoid Electrical Equipment: Do not use computers, TVs, or other electrical appliances. Unplug devices to protect them from power surges.
- Stay Off Corded Phones: Use cordless or mobile phones instead, as lightning can travel through phone lines.
- Stay Away from Windows and Doors: Lightning can strike through windows; it’s safer to stay in the interior parts of your home.
Outdoors:
- Seek Shelter: If you hear thunder, immediately move indoors or into a car with a metal roof.
- Avoid Open Fields and Hilltops: These areas are more susceptible to lightning strikes.
- Stay Away from Tall Objects: Do not shelter under trees or near poles, as lightning tends to strike tall objects.
- Avoid Water Bodies: Stay away from lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water.
- If No Shelter is Available: Crouch down with your feet together, minimizing contact with the ground. Do not lie flat.
Driving During Thunderstorms:
- Stay Inside the Vehicle: Cars can provide protection due to their metal frame, which directs lightning around the occupants.
- Avoid Touching Metal Parts: Do not touch door handles or other metal components connected to the car’s exterior.
- Pull Over Safely: If visibility is poor, safely pull over and wait for the storm to pass.
With the increasing frequency of lightning incidents in India, it’s crucial to be aware of safety measures to protect yourself and your loved ones. Staying informed and prepared can significantly reduce the risk of injury or death during thunderstorms.
