In a remarkable step toward sustainable urban infrastructure, a patent developed by 17-year-old student innovator Veruschka Pandey and her brother Vedansh Pandey proposes a breakthrough design for managing storm water drainage and flood prevention in Indian cities. The patented system, titled “A Solid Segregation Grill for Storm Water Drains,” introduces a low-cost, efficient method to filter solid contaminants from storm water, addressing a key challenge in urban sanitation and civic planning.
The innovation features a Storm Water Solid Separation Grill (SSG) comprising horizontally and vertically positioned galvanized iron pipes, angled to the direction of flow. It integrates a dual-platform mechanism made of mild steel , a fixed primary platform and a suspended secondary platform, forming a vertical comb-like structure that effectively separates debris, allowing cleaner water to pass through while preventing clogging and flooding.
This innovation forms part of Veruschka’s and Vedansh’s broader commitment to research-led sustainability. Alongside the drainage patent, they also holds a Rainwater Recharge System patent, designed to divert stormwater into aquifers, promoting groundwater conservation and climate resilience.
Her work extends beyond environmental engineering. As the founder of Project Suryanayak, she has trained thousands of citizens and ASHA workers in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), making it India’s first youth-led initiative to influence state-level health policy. Her youth-led study on Type 1 Diabetes care, published in PLOS Global Public Health, spurred discussions within the Government to integrate diabetes management into its Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) framework.
A published author of “Tween Twilight” and “The Quiet Geometry of Chaos,” Veruschka channels her creative voice into social advocacy, donating all proceeds to UNICEF. Recognized by the World Health Organization and Public Health Foundation of India, she represents a new wave of Indian youth blending innovation, empathy, and evidence-based action to drive systemic reform.
