On March 4, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Vantara, a state-of-the-art animal rescue, conservation, and rehabilitation center located within the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery Complex in Gujarat. This 3,000-acre sanctuary represents a significant stride in India’s wildlife conservation efforts.
Vantara is home to more than 2,000 animals across 43 species, providing refuge to creatures rescued from various forms of distress, including habitat loss, human-animal conflict, and poaching.
Visionary Behind Vantara
Vantara is the brainchild of Anant Ambani, a director on the boards of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Reliance Foundation. Under his leadership, the facility was established in collaboration with Reliance Industries and Reliance Foundation, reflecting a deep commitment to wildlife preservation and animal welfare. The center is managed by a dedicated team of over 2,100 staff members, including veterinarians, animal caretakers, and conservation experts. Their collective efforts ensure that each animal receives personalized care and rehabilitation services.
Some key residents include:
✅ Asiatic Lions, Snow Leopards, One-Horned Rhinoceroses.
✅ Chimpanzees, Orangutans, and other primates rescued from captivity.
✅ Hippopotamuses, Tapirs, Bongos (antelope), and rare reptiles.
✅ Golden Tigers, White Lions, and four Snow Tigers rescued from a circus.
The animals live in spacious enclosures that replicate their natural habitats, ensuring a stress-free and enriching environment.🌳
Vantara is also dedicated to:
🔹 Educating visitors on biodiversity and conservation efforts
🔹 Empowering local communities with sustainable livelihood opportunities
🔹 Training animal caretakers in ethical and humane wildlife management
PM Modi’s Interaction with Wildlife
During his visit, PM Modi actively engaged with animals, demonstrating his deep appreciation for conservation. His experiences included:
🔹 Feeding a giraffe and an orphaned rhino calf. 🦒🦏
🔹 Patting an Okapi and coming face-to-face with Chimpanzees. 🦍
🔹 Playing with Orangutans who were earlier kept in overcrowded conditions. 🙉
🔹 Observing an MRI on an Asiatic Lion and a life-saving surgery on a Leopard.
🔹 Walking among zebras and observing crocodiles underwater.
🔹 Witnessing elephants in their hydrotherapy pools for arthritis treatment. 🐘
🔹 Releasing parrots that had been rescued and rehabilitated.
By creating awareness about the importance of protecting India’s wildlife, Vantara aims to inspire future generations to respect and preserve nature.
With its world-class medical facilities, conservation programs, and commitment to animal welfare, Vantara stands as a beacon of hope for rescued animals and a model for wildlife sanctuaries worldwide. PM Modi’s visit has not only highlighted its significance but has also set a precedent for future conservation efforts in India.
