Veteran Leader Shivraj Patil, Former Union Home Minister and Lok Sabha Speaker, Passes Away at 90

Veteran Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra, today, Friday, December 12, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 90 years old.

A towering figure in Indian politics for over four decades, Patil held numerous significant Constitutional and Parliamentary responsibilities throughout his long and distinguished career.

A Career of Distinction

Patil’s political journey was marked by a steady rise from local governance to the highest offices of the Union:

  • Lok Sabha Speaker (1991–1996): He served as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha during a critical period, where he was credited with pioneering initiatives such as the introduction of the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award and the live telecasting of Lok Sabha proceedings.
  • Union Home Minister (2004–2008): He held the crucial portfolio of Union Home Minister during the UPA government. He later resigned from the post on November 30, 2008, taking moral responsibility for the security lapses that led to the devastating 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
  • Early Career: He began his public life as the municipal council chief of Latur and was a two-term member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly before entering national politics in 1980. He won the Latur Lok Sabha seat for seven consecutive terms until 2004.
  • Other Roles: Over the decades, he held various portfolios as Minister of State across ministries, including Defence, Commerce, Science and Technology, and Civil Aviation. He also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
