Game-Changer: Chinnaswamy Stadium’s SubAir System Rescues RCB vs PBKS Match

by | Apr 19, 2025 | Sports

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru stands as a testament to modern engineering in cricket infrastructure, boasting one of the world’s most advanced drainage systems—the SubAir system. This technology played a pivotal role during the rain-affected IPL 2025 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 18.

SubAir System: Revolutionizing Rain Management

Installed in 2017 by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), the SubAir system is a 200-horsepower, vacuum-powered drainage mechanism developed by the US-based company SubAir. Capable of evacuating up to 10,000 liters of water per minute, it can render the ground playable within 15 minutes after rainfall ceases.

The system operates through a network of underground pipes and air pumps that extract excess water from the field. Remote sensors detect moisture levels, activating the system as soon as rain begins, Additionally, the aeration feature maintains optimal conditions for the turf, reducing diseases and ensuring player safety.

🌱 Sustainability Initiatives at Chinnaswamy Stadium

Beyond its advanced drainage capabilities, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is a pioneer in sustainability:

  • *Solar Energy: The stadium utilizes solar panels, generating over six lakh units of electricity annually, significantly reducing carbon emissios.
  • *Water Management: A comprehensive system recycles sewage water for turf maintenance and landscaping, developed in collaboration with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB).

The integration of the SubAir system at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium exemplifies how technological advancements can mitigate weather disruptions, ensuring minimal interruption to the game and enhancing the overall experience for players and fans alike.
