Google Maps Testing New Feature: Building Entrances

by | Mar 5, 2024 | Technology & AI

Google Maps is currently testing a new feature that aims to enhance navigation by displaying entrances to buildings. While the functionality is still in the testing phase, it shows promising potential for improving user experience.

Spotting Building Entrances

According to reports, the feature was spotted in Google Maps version 11.17.0101 on a Pixel 7a device. When a user selects a building and zooms in on the map, entrances to the building are highlighted with a distinctive icon. This makes it easier for users to identify entrances, especially in crowded urban areas.

Icon Design and Functionality

Building entrances are indicated by circular icons with arrows or white circles with entry symbols. However, some users have reported inaccuracies, particularly with smaller buildings. Despite this, the feature appears to be effective for larger establishments like malls or hospitals.

Limited Availability and Development Stage

Currently, the feature seems to have limited availability and is still in the early stages of development. While it may not be accessible to all users at the moment, it showcases Google’s ongoing efforts to improve Maps functionality.

Continued Innovation in Google Maps

In recent weeks, Google has introduced several new features to Google Maps, including ‘Glanceable Directions’ and generative AI-powered search. These additions aim to provide users with more intuitive and helpful navigation experiences, even in challenging urban environments. As Google continues to refine and expand its mapping capabilities, users can expect further enhancements to improve their navigation and exploration experiences.
