ISRO Makes History: “Bahubali” Rocket Launches India’s Heaviest Satellite into Orbit

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a monumental milestone on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, by successfully launching its heaviest payload to date. The LVM3-M6 mission, often referred to as India’s “Bahubali” rocket, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, carrying the massive BlueBird Block-2 satellite into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

This mission marks a significant leap in India’s space capabilities, showcasing the country’s growing dominance in the global commercial launch market.

A New Record for Indian Spaceflight

The BlueBird Block-2 satellite, weighing approximately 6,100 kg, now holds the record as the heaviest satellite ever launched from Indian soil. This surpasses the previous record of 4,400 kg set just last month by the CMS-03 communication satellite.

  • Launch Vehicle: The LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3), standing 43.5 meters tall, performed a “textbook launch,” injecting the satellite into a 518 km circular orbit just 15 minutes after liftoff.
  • Frequency of Launch: Notably, this was the second LVM3 mission within 52 days, highlighting ISRO’s increased operational cadence and efficiency.
  • Global Impact: With this successful mission, India has now launched a total of 434 satellites for 34 different countries.

Revolutionizing Global Connectivity

The BlueBird Block-2 is not just a record-breaker in weight; it is a technological pioneer. Developed by the U.S.-based company AST SpaceMobile, the satellite features the largest commercial communications array ever deployed in LEO, spanning nearly 2,400 square feet.

The primary goal of this satellite is to enable direct-to-mobile connectivity. Unlike traditional satellite systems that require ground towers or specialized handsets, BlueBird Block-2 allows standard 4G and 5G smartphones to connect directly to the satellite. This technology is designed to:

  • Eliminate connectivity gaps in remote or underserved rural areas.
  • Support high-speed voice calls, video streaming, and data services globally.
  • Provide 24/7 coverage without the need for terrestrial infrastructure.

Strategic and Commercial Significance

The LVM3-M6 mission was a dedicated commercial flight managed by NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO. By successfully delivering such a massive payload at a competitive cost, ISRO has strengthened its position as a reliable alternative to global providers like SpaceX.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the launch as a “proud milestone,” stating that it reinforces India’s heavy-lift launch capability and bolsters the foundations for future ambitious projects, including the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.
