NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, of Indian origin, is set to return to Earth on March 19, 2025, after spending eight months aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Her extended mission, alongside fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, was due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner capsule that brought them to the station.

A Historic Mission with Unexpected Challenges
Williams and Wilmore arrived at the ISS in June 2024, becoming the first crew to fly on Boeing’s Starliner capsule as part of a critical test flight. Initially planned to last about a week, the mission was prolonged due to technical problems with the Starliner’s thruster engines. As a result, NASA decided to bring the Boeing capsule back to Earth without a crew, leaving Williams and Wilmore on the ISS until an alternate return plan was arranged.
The Journey Home
After months of uncertainty, NASA has confirmed that Williams and Wilmore will return to Earth on a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
Williams and Wilmore will return on a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. The Crew-10 mission is scheduled to launch on March 12, 2025, bringing their replacements to the ISS. This mission will carry NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov.
During a week-long handover process, Williams, currently the Space Station Commander, will pass on her responsibilities to the incoming crew. On March 19, 2025, Williams and Wilmore will board the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and return to Earth.
This marks the end of an extraordinary mission that showcased their resilience and dedication to space exploration.
