In a major boost to the Indo-Russian defense partnership, Moscow has confirmed its readiness to offer India unrestricted technology transfer for its fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Su-57. This unprecedented proposal, presented by Russian defense representatives at the Dubai Air Show, aims to solidify Russia’s position as India’s most reliable strategic defense partner.
Unrestricted Access to Critical Technology
The Russian proposal addresses key strategic concerns historically raised by India regarding foreign defense purchases, specifically the reluctance of Western nations to share core proprietary technology.
- Comprehensive Transfer: The offer is comprehensive, covering the transfer of assembly and advanced technological knowledge for critical systems, including the fighter’s engines, optics, low signature (stealth) technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI) elements, and AESA radar.
- Local Production and Upgrades: Russian officials emphasized that the initiative supports the local license production of the aircraft in India and includes the necessary provisions for integrating Indian weaponry and supporting future, unrestricted software enhancements over the platform’s operational lifecycle.
- Sanction-Proofing: By offering unrestricted technology provisions, Russia is signaling its commitment to ensuring India’s defense supply chains remain insulated from potential disruptions caused by external sanctions.
A New Phase in Bilateral Defense
Representatives from Rosoboronexport and the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) affirmed that all demands and technical requirements New Delhi may have regarding the Su-57 are “completely acceptable.” UAC Director General Vadim Badekha underscored the reliability of Russia’s six-decade-long partnership, noting past support during periods when India faced global sanctions.
The offer also extends to joint development opportunities, including a proposed two-seat version of the Su-57 specifically for the Indian Air Force.
This move follows a series of recent high-level diplomatic meetings, including those between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Russian President Vladimir Putin, reflecting strong momentum in bilateral ties ahead of President Putin’s anticipated visit to India.
