As of February 19, 2025, Rekha Gupta has been announced as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) return to power in the capital after 27 years.
Background and Political Career
Rekha Gupta, born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, is a seasoned politician with deep roots in Delhi’s political landscape. She began her political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and served as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. Her academic credentials include a degree from Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, and a law degree from Chaudhary Charan Singh University.
Gupta’s experience extends to municipal governance, having been a three-time councillor and former mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). She was elected as a councillor from Uttari Pitampura in 2007 and re-elected from North Pitampura in 2012. Within the BJP, she has held significant positions, including National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha and General Secretary of the Delhi state unit.
2025 Delhi Assembly Elections
In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Gupta contested from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, securing a decisive victory over Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Bandana Kumari with a margin of 29,595 votes. The BJP emerged victorious with 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP’s representation dwindled to 22 seats.
Rekha Gupta is scheduled to take the oath of office on February 20, 2025, at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. The ceremony is expected to be attended by high-profile dignitaries, celebrities, and party workers. Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, has been elected as the Deputy Chief Minister.
Gupta’s appointment as Chief Minister signifies a pivotal shift in Delhi’s political landscape, with the BJP reclaiming power after nearly three decades. She becomes the fourth woman to hold the Chief Minister’s office in Delhi, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi Marlena.
As Rekha Gupta assumes office, her administration faces the task of addressing pressing issues in the capital, ranging from infrastructure development and public services to the cleaning of the Yamuna River, all while navigating the complex political dynamics of Delhi.
