The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has made a historic breakthrough by successfully completing the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) on January 16, 2025. With this remarkable achievement, India has become the fourth nation to accomplish in-space docking, joining an elite group comprising the United States, Russia, and China.
A Groundbreaking Mission
The SpaDeX mission revolved around two small satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), each weighing approximately 220 kilograms. These satellites were launched into a 475 km circular orbit on December 30, 2024, aboard the PSLV C60 rocket. The launch took place from the prestigious Satish Dhawan Space Centre located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
Precision Docking Maneuvers
The docking process involved intricate maneuvers, with the satellites closing the gap from a 15-meter separation to a precise 3-meter hold point. Once in position, a successful capture and stabilization occurred, marking the culmination of the experiment’s core objectives. Post-docking, the two satellites were brought under combined control. In the coming days, further tests, including undocking and power transfer evaluations, are scheduled.
A Stepping Stone for India’s Space Aspirations
With SpaDeX, ISRO has demonstrated its prowess in mastering complex technologies required for docking and collaborative satellite control. This success not only enhances India’s global reputation but also opens new avenues for international collaboration and commercial opportunities in space exploration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO and the entire space fraternity for this groundbreaking success. “It is a significant stepping stone for India’s ambitious space missions in the years to come,” he shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
This achievement is a critical milestone for India’s expanding capabilities in space technology, paving the way for advanced endeavors such as satellite servicing, space station development, and deep-space exploration missions.
India’s space odyssey continues to inspire, bringing the nation closer to its long-term vision of becoming a leader in space science and technology.
