Despite receiving a lukewarm reception from some critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire proves them wrong in the most entertaining way possible.
In my opinion, this movie is a blast. It ranks among my favorites alongside the original and Afterlife. The camaraderie among the characters, spanning generations of Ghostbusters, adds to the charm, while the film maintains a solid pace throughout. Plus, the comedic talents of Kumail Nanjiana and Patton Oswalt, along with other surprises, elevate the fun factor even further.
Set two years after Afterlife, the story follows the Spengler kids, played by McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard, as they continue their ghost-busting adventures in New York City. Joined by their mother, portrayed by Carrie Coon, and her boyfriend Gary Grooberson (the always delightful Paul Rudd), they form the latest Ghostbusting team.
The plot thickens when Nadeem (Nanjiani) delivers a mysterious orb to Ray Stantz’ (Dan Aykroyd) shop, unknowingly unleashing a chilling secret that threatens the entire city. Meanwhile, old rivalries resurface when Walter Peck (William Atherton) returns to stir up trouble, forcing Phoebe (Grace) to confront her own challenges. Amidst the chaos, Phoebe befriends a ghost named Melody (Emily Alyn Lynd), adding an emotional layer to the narrative.
Without revealing spoilers, the film delivers a thrilling showdown as new and veteran Ghostbusters unite to save the city. Ernie Hudson shines as Winston Zeddmore, alongside Annie Potts as Janine and the iconic Bill Murray as Peter Venkman. Although Sigourney Weaver is notably absent, the cast delivers standout performances, with Paul Rudd and Kumail Nanjiani stealing the show with their comedic timing.
Directed by Gil Kenan, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire maintains the franchise’s spirit while injecting fresh energy into the storyline. Despite minor inconsistencies in the plot, the film excels in delivering heartwarming nostalgia and genuine laughs. It leaves audiences eagerly anticipating the possibility of future installments.
In conclusion, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a delightful ride filled with nostalgia, humor, and heart. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer to the franchise, this film is sure to leave you entertained. So, who you gonna call? Enjoy your week, everyone!
