On January 29, 2025, at 06:23 IST, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone by successfully launching the NVS-02 navigation satellite using the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F15) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
This mission marked the 100th launch from Sriharikota, underscoring India’s advancements in space technology.
Mission Details
GSLV-F15 is the 17th flight of India’s GSLV and the 11th to feature an indigenous cryogenic upper stage. The NVS-02 satellite, part of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), also known as NavIC, was the primary payload for this mission. NavIC is designed to provide accurate position information services to users in India and the surrounding region.
Significance of NVS-02
The NVS-02 satellite is intended to replace the partially successful IRNSS-1E satellite. It is expected to enhance the performance and reliability of the NavIC system, contributing to various applications such as terrestrial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking, and mapping services.
Historical Context
The successful deployment of NVS-02 not only strengthens India’s navigation capabilities but also highlights ISRO’s consistent progress in space exploration and satellite technology. This 100th launch from Sriharikota stands as a testament to the dedication and expertise of India’s scientific community.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has outlined an ambitious plan to launch over 70 missions in the next five years, encompassing more than 50 satellite deployments and several scientific endeavors. The future missions include the deployment of satellites for navigation, weather monitoring, remote sensing, and communication purposes.
This achievement reflect ISRO’s commitment to advancing India’s space capabilities and contributing significantly to global space exploration.
