On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25, 2024), Anjali Bhushan, The Former Head of Content & Production at Viacom18 Studios and Founder of Yantra Films, proudly joins forces to raise awareness and combat the widespread issue of gender-based violence. She has extended her support to those dedicated to this cause, recognizing the remarkable individuals who are tirelessly working to safeguard women, promote gender equality, and eliminate violence globally. Managed by UN Women, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, under the UNiTE initiative, highlights the alarming rise in violence against women, with this year’s theme: “Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence Against Women.”
Advocating Systemic Change for Gender Equality
She says “To eliminate violence against women and all genders, fostering a healing mindset must become a universal priority. Educating men on the principles of equality and respect is crucial, as the majority of aggressors and perpetrators tend to be male. A healthier society emerges when men adopt collaborative rather than combative attitudes. Equally essential is empowering girls with self-love, leadership skills, and the same opportunities traditionally afforded to boys. The outdated divisional constructs between genders no longer have a place in modern society. Change must begin in schools and family systems, as children internalize behavioral patterns early in life.”
She further adds “Moreover, media, films, music, and gaming must actively promote gender sensitivity. For instance, when a woman-led film fails, it’s often labeled as proof of a broader issue of unwanted female protagonists, unlike male-led films. This highlights the urgent need for a systemic mindset shift in our culture and mainstream narratives.”
